Allied Pharmacies last week revealed that it has “taken over the management of 60 Jhoots pharmacies”.

It said that while the “majority of these locations are temporarily closed”, it is “fully committed to reinstating essential pharmacy services” at the branches.

The pharmacies are located across England and bring the chain’s total number of branches to around 210 in England and Wales following the takeover, a representative confirmed to C+D. See the list of locations in full below.

The representative revealed that the transaction involves an asset purchase as well as some properties.

They confirmed to C+D that the 60 branches were previously part of 21 companies under the Jhoots Pharmacy brand, including SNJ Health Limited and 20 businesses with company names beginning LP SD.

There are various businesses operating under the Jhoots brand name and a representative last week stressed that Jhoots pharmacies owned and operated by Manjit Jhooty under Jhoots Healthcare Ltd and Pasab Ltd are not part of the takeover.

“Outstanding salary arrears”

Allied Pharmacies said that it is “taking steps to address outstanding salary arrears of employed staff” as part of “efforts to support the workforce and rebuild trust”.

The pharmacy chain expressed its “appreciation for the dedicated former Jhoots employees who have been impacted during this difficult period”, adding that their “commitment has not gone unnoticed”.

It also encouraged “locum pharmacist contractors who have worked with any of these branches to contact the Jhoots administrators”.

Allied Pharmacies stressed that its “immediate priority is to resume pharmaceutical services as soon as possible for these sites”.

“We recognise the fundamental role that community pharmacies play in supporting public health and wellbeing and understand the disruption caused by these closures, particularly for vulnerable groups who depend on local access to vital healthcare services,” it said.

It added that while “a variety of factors may have contributed to the difficulties at Jhoots pharmacies”, the transition “highlights the broader challenges” facing the sector – with “almost a decade” of “systemic underfunding” placing “immense strain on many operators”.

“Without meaningful intervention at a national level, the collapse of other significant providers – as seen previously with Lloydspharmacy and now Jhoots – could continue to affect patient care and the viability of community pharmacies nationwide,” it said.

“Allied Pharmacies remains focused in our mission to deliver exceptional pharmaceutical care and we look forward to strengthening our connection with each community we serve,” it added.

“Independent businesses”

A representative for two of the Jhoots Pharmacy businesses - Jhoots Healthcare Ltd and Pasab Ltd - previously told C+D that the numerous allegations of financial mismanagement at Jhoots pharmacies do not relate to those under Manjit Jhooty’s ownership and operation.

The representative stressed that the different companies are “independent businesses and share only the Jhoots Pharmacy brand name”.

C+D exclusively revealed last month that locum pharmacists have launched legal action against businesses operated by Sarbjit Jhooty and Nilam Patel over unpaid fees.

It comes after pharmacy minister Stephen Kinnock last month told MPs that “the services provided by Jhoots are falling well below the mark”.

It follows extensive C+D reporting on the pharmacy chain, including that staff had been unable to “pay for groceries” and had to “hitch rides” to work after it failed to pay their wages, while others said they were owed thousands and resorting to food banks.
