Superdrug yesterday (July 1) announced the launch of a “dedicated teen skincare service” in its high street pharmacies, offering “free walk-in support, expert advice and tailored treatment for young people going through puberty”.

Currently available in three Superdrug pharmacies in Manchester Piccadilly, Glasgow and Milton Keynes, the service will be rolled out across all pharmacies “in the coming months”, it said, “drastically improving access to expert skincare advice”.

According to the multiple, pharmacists will offer “free of charge skincare consultations” for 13- to 18-year-olds, along with “self-care advice and treatment recommendations”.

The service is launching alongside Superdrug’s “glow through it” campaign supporting teenagers – and their parents – through the “often-overlooked physical, emotional and social challenges” of puberty, it said.

Superdrug is “reshaping [the] outdated teen narrative” with this campaign, aiming to “reduce the stigma and transform puberty into a more positive experience” through its educational resources, support and services, it added.

“Empower teens”

Superdrug revealed that the teen skincare service is also accompanied by:

  • A “pilot teen advice health clinic” service available in Superdrug branches across London “over the next few months” for both teens and parents to “speak to an expert” about “any teen-related topic”
  • A “teen edit” of Superdrug own-brand “health and beauty product bundles” to “support teens through this important life stage”
  • The reworking of product descriptions for “everyday essential puberty vitamins and minerals” into “Gen Z product descriptions” with “phrasing that resonates with this audience” such as “our body’s BFF” and “healthy bones + good vibes”

Superdrug pharmacy director Craig Watt acknowledged that “skincare struggles during puberty can have a huge impact on teenagers’ confidence and mental wellbeing”, while “access to expert advice isn’t always easy or affordable”.

“Our pharmacists are highly trained and approachable and this new service will ensure young people can access trusted advice, without judgement, in their local Superdrug store,” he said.

Watt stressed that Superdrug wants to “empower teens to better understand and care for their skin, while also supporting their self-esteem”, adding that “practical advice [and] compassion” is just as important as finding the right products.

It comes after Boots announced the launch of new dermatology training covering “common skin conditions” for its pharmacy teams alongside a new AI tool for customers with skin complaints in May.

The training will equip pharmacy staff to offer “advice and treatment” on common skin conditions including acne, psoriasis and atopic dermatitis entirely free of charge with no appointment needed, it said at the time.

In March, Superdrug revealed plans to open 25 new stores this year – although it remained unclear how many would include pharmacies.
