New deduction scheme will not lose the average contractor money, says PSNC

It is “not correct” to say the average contractor will “lose out” following the implementation of the new discount deduction scheme, a Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee (PSNC) director has said.

Mike Dent: “We know these are very complex calculations”

It follows claims that contractors might face greater losses than they are at present during the transition period to the new scheme and after its full implementation.

But PSNC director of pharmacy funding Mike Dent said it is not correct to assume that the average contractor will make a loss.

“We know these are very complex calculations, but the only way to get an accurate picture for an individual contractor is to use your specific dispensing mix,” he suggested.

Mr Dent clarified that, under the new scheme, only one deduction will be applied to contractors’ dispensing activity, “not two, as some calculations have assumed”.

“And as well as an increase in deduction on generics, contractors will see a decrease in the deduction on brands.

“We think that for most contractors, the combined impact of these two changes will be in the order of a few hundred pounds per month – in either direction – but overall for the sector, the changes will be cost neutral,” Mr Dent argued.

PSNC has recently developed a tool to help contractors estimate the impact the new deduction scheme is likely to have on their payments.

The negotiator has also invited contractors to attend a webinar on October 12, at 7:30pm, in which PSNC representatives will explain what is expected to change under the new scheme.
