The “first and only” GLP-1 pill for weight loss is now on sale in the US, its manufacturer Novo Nordisk yesterday (January 5) announced.

The drugmaker said the oral version of its weight loss jab Wegovy was greenlit by regulators on December 22, 2025 and is only approved in the US.

The pill is “broadly available” at more than 70,000 US pharmacies such as CVS and Costco, it added, as well as through telehealth providers including Ro, LifeMD and WeightWatchers.

Novo Nordisk said self-pay patients can purchase the 1.5mg starting dose of the Wegovy pill for around $5 a day, or $149 a month.

The 4mg dose will also cost $149 a month until April 15 of this year, before increasing to $199 a month, it added.

And the highest doses of the Wegovy pill - 9mg and 25mg - will be available for $299, the company said - while commercially insured patients “pay as little as $25 per month with the Wegovy savings offer”.

Novo Nordisk’s senior vice president of marketing and patient solutions Ed Cinca said the “wait is over” for people who have been “waiting on the sidelines for a medicine that was right for them”.

“Wegovy pill is here, and it represents a significant innovation as the first and only GLP-1 pill for weight loss,” he added.

“This moment is about changing what’s possible in weight management, and to make that possible, we have worked to ensure [the] Wegovy pill is affordable and accessible to those who need it, however they choose to receive their care”.

It comes after US digital health platform Hims & Hers launched a “comprehensive” weight loss programme in the UK in December.

The company, which says it has “almost 2.5 million” subscribers, said its “personalised” weight management treatment plans “may include branded GLP-1 options such as Mounjaro or Wegovy”, as well as “the oral non-prescription treatment option Orlos”

And in October, WeightWatchers announced that its US members will now be able to choose Amazon Pharmacy to fill their weight management drug prescriptions.
