The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) has today published the results for the “first elections” to the National Pharmacy Advisory Councils in England, Scotland and Wales.

The elected members will “form a key part of the new governance structure of the future Royal College of Pharmacy” and will be responsible for “developing pharmacy policy and practice in their nation”, it said.

They will also be responsible for “supporting professional development activity in their nation” and “engaging with members and representing the college”, it added.

According to the RPS, voter participation in England increased to 11.1% this year while Wales had a turnout of 18.1%.

No election took place in Scotland as the number of candidates matched the number of vacancies.

RPS chief executive Paul Bennett thanked all candidates who entered the election, acknowledging that “their enthusiasm, leadership and passion reflect their commitment to building an ambitious and confident royal college that benefits both professionals and patients”.

He extended a “warm welcome” to the newly elected council members, saying that this is an “important step towards building an inclusive and influential royal college for pharmacy”.

It comes after the RPS opened nominations for elections on January 5, describing them as a “unique opportunity for members to influence pharmacy policy and practice”.

Meanwhile, the RPS revealed earlier this week that, following a meeting of the Privy Council, the King had “approved the application” to amend its Royal Charter.

The body said it will now become the Royal College of Pharmacy on April 15.
