The “substantial” Hanford’s Chemist in Llansamlet was snapped up by south Wales-based chain Overdrake Limited – which owns around 10 pharmacies – following a confidential sales process, Christie & Co announced yesterday (May 11).

The “high-volume” pharmacy, which is attached to a health centre, dispenses an average of 18,000 items per month and was owned by Patricia Edmunds for over 26 years before being brought to market to allow her to retire, the broker said.

Ms Edmunds said she was “absolutely delighted” to have sold her business and was looking forward “to a long and peaceful retirement”.  The pharmacy was sold for an undisclosed amount.

Director of medical at Christie & Co Jonathan Board said the pharmacy had attracted “exceptional interest”, which “demonstrates that the demand for well-established, high-volume pharmacies continues apace”.

Although pharmacy owners continue to experience “a number of pressures…including rising costs and wages”, the broker regularly sees “multiple bids on the majority of the pharmacies we take to market”, he said.

It follows the sale of a “popular” Liverpool last month (April 24) to two “experienced pharmacists”. 

Last month (April 18), Christie & Co said there had been “an unprecedented number of pharmacies on the market recently”.
