Boots has extended its food options by launching a range of evening ready meals in 100 London branches.

The Shapers Food for Later range, introduced on Monday (March 11), includes 25 low-calorie ready meals, side dishes and desserts.

Any combination of a main meal and a side dish or dessert within the range would contain 500 calories and was aimed at shoppers who wanted to eat healthily but lacked the time to cook, Boots said.

"We understand that the pressures of everyday life can make healthy eating a challenge, which is why we offer a variety of services to help support customers in their healthy eating goals" Peter Bainbridge, Boots

Boots UK director of pharmacy Peter Bainbridge said pharmacists could help customers with their choice of meal.

"We understand that the pressures of everyday life can make healthy eating a challenge, which is why we offer a variety of services to help support customers in their healthy eating goals," he said. "Whether it's eating more healthily or managing weight, our pharmacists can have meaningful conversations to help customers achieve their ambitions."

The Shapers range would have an introductory price of two main meals for £5 until the end of this month, after which one ready meal will retail for up to £3.25.

The meals, which include dishes such as chicken tikka masala and broccoli and cauliflower cheese, were free of artificial colours, flavours and hydrogenated fats, Boots said.

Should other pharmacies follow Boots' lead and start selling healthy ready meals?
