The Caidr app – available from the Apple Store and Google Play – works by “asking users to respond to a series of questions, then providing information and suggestions based on their answers”, the manufacturer said.

The app helps users "distinguish minor ailments from a more serious illness" and includes a direct referral to a pharmacy for advice on over-the-counter (OTC) products, the manufacturer said.

Clinova medical consultant and hospital doctor Tom Bracewell said pharmacists are the "real experts" in medicines and "can often better help patients with minor ailments in treating and alleviating their symptoms".

The app comes alongside a call from the Royal College of GPs in December 2017 for patients to consider other alternatives – including seeking assistance from a pharmacist – before visiting a GP, Clinova said.

Clinova business development executive and pharmacist Matthew Thornes added that Caidr marks a "fantastic opportunity for community pharmacy and digital healthcare to meet".
