Colgate Periogard 0.2 per cent chlorhexidine mouthwash is being recalled because of potential bacterial contamination, the MHRA has announced.
Pharmacists have been asked to quarantine all unexpired stock of the general sales list medicine and return it to their wholesaler.
Although it is unlikely that the bacteria concerned, Burkholderia, will cause harm in healthy people, it could cause infection in those with a compromised immune system, an MHRA spokesperson warned.
The contamination was confirmed when samples from retained stock were tested. There have been no reports of adverse reactions to the product so far, an MHRA spokesperson said.
The recall by Colgate-Palmolive affects 11 countries in Europe and Australasia and a full investigation is underway.
The recall affects all unexpired batches in the UK and pharmacists can contact Colgate-Palmolive on 01483 464513 with any medical information inquiries.
