Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is the non-malignant enlargement of the prostate gland. It is a progressive condition and a common part of ageing, and falls under the umbrella of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), which cover storage, voiding and post-micturition symptoms affecting the lower urinary tract.1 It is not usually harmful and patients are not at increased risk of prostate cancer.2
