HIV is a retrovirus – its genetic material is encoded in ribonucleic acid (RNA) and this must be reverse-transcribed into deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) by viral reverse-transcriptase before replication occurs. It causes a chronic viral infection with no available cure or vaccine, and its management remains drug-focused.
